LAND AS ART

A Practice of Attunement *

My artistic practice started back in 2021 when a friend asked to join her in The 100 Days of Practice initiative. She was going through the loss of her father, and I wanted to adjacently support her.

Little did I know it would be the start of a body of work that documents my attunement and conscious dissolve between inner and outer landscapes.

Inner Roots, Outer Trees

This series is about sit-spotting with trees. Led by curiosity and driven by direct experience, I dabbled in forest bathing. Fascinated by the proven benefits of regulating one’s blood pressure, nervous system, and mood, I undertook this practice as a form of self-study.

The materials include: discarded charcoal, unused watercolour pages from a discarded journal, and an offering in the form of tea, water, tobacco, or fire. Every drawing is documented in its time and place with natural lighting. Unaltered, unfussed, and as it was. The limitation of not being able to amend, edit, or change the medium is reflective of the natural world. There is an acceptance and embrace of what is.

Colour My Aura

This series started it all. After learning to perceive auras, under the mentorship of a Taiwanese shamanic practitioner based in Vancouver, Canada, I entered into my first 100 Day practice of cultivating this skill.

The art was created by using a digital stencil of a female figure and colouring the areas around her, based on what was seen in the mind's eye. Through this meditative process, I began to understand how whole foods and their colours relate to our being, as well as the energy connection of each body part.

Using markers from my days at Uni, I documented my meditations daily. Materials and co-creators also include lavender essential oil, coconut oil, and paper. With a knowledge of meridians and plant spirits, we worked in tandem to witness and translate my aura.

Dream Depictions

To have the ability to remember one's dreams in technicolour, with full clarity, is both a blessing and a curse. This 100 Day practice explored the visual and written translation of those dreams.

I created boundaries around the practice by only documenting one dream per night. And by collaborating with the Dream Maker, I had to work at the pace of my dreams. Sometimes I went days in a row, and others I had to wait. Colours are vivid and full of meaning, leading to the assumption that the wisdom acquired from aura perceiving carried over into the dream world.

To now view my dreams, years later, I am able to play to with time as a medium. The final pieces are ever-changing in their relevance and meaning to my inner and outer landscapes.

A Deck of Sorts

This is an ever-growing series, birthed from a personal reaction to what I am experiencing in personal development work, entrepreneurship, spirituality, pop culture, and as a millennial.

Originally created to accompany thought leadership posts on LinkedIn, these series has become it's own thing. In time it will be a deck that speaks to the energetic shifts that taken place entrepreneurship. The collages are created digitally using imagery from Pexels and home photos.

Fire Sculptures

Ceremony is the greatest way we can consciously connect. It has an honouring that only tradition and time can give. My favourite practice is to take what needs to be burned. What needs to be released and is of the earth and creates a beautiful portal into death. I become an usher of alchemy.

Often using scrap wax, fallen branches, discarded paperwork, and dried flowers I build altars within the firepit. As I sculpt the fire starter and arrange the hearth, a new life is given to those long forgotten. A collective beauty emerges, and there is a remembrance that we are all going to die. Done with grace and intention, this practice stimulates all senses and in its simplest form reminds us that change is always possible, if not inevitable.

Pumpkins are my medium of choice come Halloween.

Artist Statement

Justine Anweiler is a mixed media artist from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She studied visual communications at the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly ACAD) and recently returned to Calgary after a decade in London, where she worked as an award-winning book cover designer at Pan Macmillan and as an experience designer for Lululemon. Her work has been featured in Creative Review, where she was interviewed about her creative process.

After leaving the confines of the rectangle, her practice evolved into designing experiences that connect humans with their inner and outer landscapes. Her practice begins with time outdoors – ritual, wandering, and a deep curiosity for place.

She discovers landscapes experientially through people, their beliefs, food, and cultural stories. Through discovery, documentation, and expression, her work becomes a bridge between tradition and transmission. Mediums are chosen intuitively and may include gatherings, ethnobotanical studies, or visual expressions in collage, painting, photography, writing, or installation.

A central theme in her work is cultivating expressions that awaken a sense of nature within. Through documenting her own growth and connection to place, she invites the viewer into an experience of their own.

“I felt both supported and well-guided throughout the experience. While the entire process made sense, the outcomes were not entirely predictable, which I truly appreciate. Sometimes, self-discovery workshops can feel very repetitive, but with her, I found a nuanced perspective that greatly enriched my journey in building my personal brand.”
